Una amplia variedad de problemas

Hay muchos problemas visuales diferentes relacionados con el aprendizaje que pueden impactar el desempeño escolar de un niño. Habilidades como coordinación mano-ojo, habilidad para leer y para enfocar, todo está atado, no en una pequeña parte, a la visión.

Estos problemas sólo pueden ser formalmente diagnosticados por un profesional del cuidado de los ojos, pero hay numerosas señales notables que pueden indicar que hay un problema, y es importante tanto para los padres como para los maestros el reconocer estos para que al notarse, el niño pueda recibir un diagnóstico correcto y tratamiento.

Si un problema es reconocido y tratado rápidamente, puede prevenir un pequeño problema volverse mayor.

Por qué esto importa

Expertos dicen que aproximadamente el 80 por ciento de lo que un niño aprende en la escuela es hecho visualmente. La buena visión es esencial si un niño va a alcanzar un máximo potencial académico.

Además a las obvias dificultades académicas que estos problemas pueden causar, también pueden dañar la autoestima del niño en un punto crítico en su vida.

Señales a tener en cuenta

Aquí hay una lista no exhaustiva de señales que podrían indicar si un niño podría estar sufriendo de un problema visual relacionado con el aprendizaje.

Entrecerrar los ojos frecuentemente
Dificultad para leer por largos periodos de tiempo
Se queja de sentir los ojos “cansados”
Frotarse los ojos frecuentemente
Dificultad para mantener el lugar mientras lee, o apoyarse en usar un dedo para marcar el lugar.
Mala comprensión lectora
Problema en enfocarse o prestar atención, especialmente por extensos periodos de tiempo.
Cubrirse un ojo o cerrar solo uno frecuentemente
Se queja de visión doble o borrosa
Dolor de cabeza regulares, especialmente al leer
Dificultad visualizando o recordando cosas basado en algo que leyó
Problema para aprender conceptos básicos de matemáticas, como tamaño, posición y magnitud.
Letra y dibujos descuidados, dificultad para permanecer en o dentro las líneas, o dificultad para copiar notas del pizarrón.
Tiene poca dificultad para responder oralmente pero le cuesta responder por escrito.
Invierte letras o palabras al leer o escribir.

Qué hacer

Si alguno de estos síntomas aparece, los padres del niño deberían estar informados tanto del problema como del hecho de que podría ser un problema visual (a diferencia de una discapacidad de aprendizaje.) La responsabilidad de los padres es llevar a su niño a un profesional del cuidado de los ojos para que su vista pueda ser correctamente examinada y, cualquier problema tratado.

My husband and I were immediately impressed with Dr Ikeda. I was hit by a car while cycling which caused broken bones and three brain injuries. The brain injuries caused double vision. Dr. Ikeda examined my eyes and got me started on vision therapy with his occupational therapist who specializes in vision therapy. She (Chris) is absolutely great. I am impressed with the array of tools used to help recover my binocular vision. I am doing things I never thought were possible (balance boards etc). Chris pushes me and keeps me motivated. I really enjoy my sessions with her. The office staff is always friendly and they have a wonderful appointment reminder tool that makes it easy to keep my calendar up to date. The Vision Therapy is handled in a separate office through a different door from the shared waiting room. Chris, the vision therapist, has a wide and varied assortment of tools, equipment and resources to best evaluate and treat most vision issues. After just a few visits, my double vision became easier to control, using exercises developed during the therapy process. It was time well-spent.

Dr. Ikeda has always been my doctor and I would never want another one. He is the doctor for my whole family and is always asking how everyone is doing. This is not for the eye exam but for the frames selection portion. I brought my prescription from Kaiser here with my VSP insurance. The reception staff was very polite and professional. Manny helped me to pick out frames and explain my coverage. Very helpful and patient not like the individual at the other place I rated here on Yelp. I was running late and he still helped me and was not bothered at all. I am so glad I came here ..........very pleased.
